Conformation
General Properties
- Sonny is a solid, heavy-boned dog with the soul of a clown. He is very clean -
not overdone at all despite his overall thickness. He is medium red with clear
white markings -- he has a patch over one side of his head, a white ruff around
his neck, white muzzle, chest and belly and long white socks in front. He has no
ticking. His coat is short and sleek. His eyes are dark and expressive, and he
has "eyeliner" around the eye with the patch. His pigment is shoe-polish black.
He has an unbroken wrinkle over the nose and a pleasing pattern of wrinkles --
enough to frame a massive head, but nothing coarse. He moves straight down off
the shoulder in front and straight down from the hip behind, with a pronounced
roll and "Frigate-style" strut. He's a dog who looks his best standing loose and
free-baited - he sets himself up squarely, looks you straight in the eye, cocks
his head and smiles. He weighs about 65 pounds, and gives an overall impression
of great strength and stability.
Head
- Sonny has a well-wrinkled,
properly proportioned head with excellent length of skull, a deep stop and a
wide, true, beautifully turned jaw. His teeth form a straight, even row. His
skull is classically brick-shaped, with great width and depth. The layback of
his skull and nose are flat - his nose lays back into the line of his skull. His
ears are small, fine, and properly rosed -- we didn't glue any ears in his
litter. His eyes are very dark. He has a strong, thick, well arched neck which
is set well, with enough dewlap to provide proper balance without being coarse.
Body
- Sonny's substance was obvious from the time he was born. He has
massive bone and a magnificent
front, broad shoulders which are tacked on properly. His rear feet show
through his front when he free stacks. He has great width and depth and spring
through the chest and rib, with an excellent brisket. He has a medium-length
back and a good topline. His tail set is low, and he has a pump tail which is
usually wagging. His rear is well-muscled and sound; ideally, we would like
slightly more angulation. He has small, tight feet.
Temperament and Health
- Sonny is calm, confident, very intelligent and very outgoing - he relishes
every new adventure, and every new friend. At home he is a clown -- he is
playful and mischievous, and has been known to organize furniture-moving parties
and kitchen raids which other dogs would not think of without him. He is
sociable and affectionate. Like his father, Gunner, and grandfather, Hercules,
Sonny is exceptionally good with other dogs of both sexes -- while none have
been timid or submissive, they don't have that "alpha" drive, and all have lived
uncrated with other males even though they are actively used at stud.
Sonny is a healthy dog with a good throat and palate and wide nostrils; he shows
with his mouth shut. His eyes are clear and healthy, with no extra lashes. He is
a structurally sound, active, vigorous animal. His coat and skin are good, with
no allergies or other problems. His only complaint is an interdigital cyst that
flares up occasionally. He has a pump tail, with four generations of really good
tails behind him on both sides of the pedigree. All the hearts of the six
puppies in his litter were healthy, and we know of no heart or thyroid problems
behind him.
Show Record
Sonny’s show career is just starting. He is generally winning or placing in
large bred-by classes at specialty shows. He has eight points to date.
Breeding Record
What’s Behind Him
Sonny's father, Ch. Shrink-a-Bull Top Gun (“Gunner”), is nine and a half and
still actively used at stud. He’s a little arthritic and
his eyes are a little dry, but he still hops on and off his favorite recliner,
and he still dances for dinner. He’s still eager and willing to make puppies.
He has two champions, with another six in the home stretch and a new group ready
to start soon. Sonny's paternal grandfather
Ch. DEYDEL STEADFAST HERCULES lived to 10; Herc's father
CH GLYNDEBOURNE ROYAL FANFARE and a
littermate lived to 13, and their mother lived to 15. Sonny's mom, Ch. Helfyre's
One Hot Number, is five, with no health problems. Her mother and grandmother are
still going strong at age 8 and 10 respectively. Sonny's maternal
grandfather,
CH. CHEROKEE DAKOTA ROBERT, broke the then all-time record for
specialty best of breeds as a veteran being shown in BOB against his great
grandchildren. Robert’s dad, CH PRESTWICK GAWAIN, is holding his own at
12.
Gunner is described and pictured on our web site. He came to live with us when
he was seven, and was not actively at stud until then. His first few pups are
now in the show ring. Sonny’s sister, Resolute Rynkly Helfyre, was Winner’s
bitch at the Bulldog Club of Connecticut Specialty, earning her second major,
and 9th point, that weekend. She is a multiple breed winner and group placing
from the classes. From a breeding to Resolute Mountain
Melody, Resolute Absolute Force has nine points and
Resolute Magic Dragon (“Puff”) was Best in Sweepstakes
under Pat Hartle and Reserve Winners Dog and Best Puppy under Frank Kauffman
from the 9-12 month class at the BCNJ Specialty. Puff was Best Puppy Dog at the
BC Connecticut Match Show from the 6-9 month class under Fred Haynes. He has 14
points and three majors, two under breeder/judges. From breeding to
Ch. Camelot’s Steadfast Jezebel, Ch.
Camelot’s Brazin Hussy she was Best Puppy in Match at Lower Susquehanna BC under
Paul Thornburg and BOS in Futurity at BCNJ under Jill Lange.
Herc and Herc's parents are also described and pictured on our web site, along
with most of the champions Herc produced. Herc is a Hall of Fame producer, as
are both his parents.
Sonny's Dam, Ch. Helfyre's One Hot Number (Zoë), finished with four majors with
most of her points under breeder judges. She completed her championship with a
four point major, going Best of Breed over six specials. She has produced two
champions from her first breeding to Ch. Warmvalley Buddy Boy; both finished
with specialty majors and specialty sweeps wins. Zoë's dam,
Ch. Helfyre-Lebo's Grace Poupon (Gracie) ,
has produced three champions to date, including the number one bitch in the
country, Ch. Helfyre Little Pond Promise. Gracie's sire, Ch. Shrink-A-Bull Snow
Drift, finished with multiple specialty majors. Gracie finished with specialty
majors, as did her dam, Ch. Helfyre's I'll Show You (Patch), who finished with
two specialty majors. Patch's sire, Ch. Kozabull Glyndebourne Zeke, was the top
bulldog in the county in the early 1990's, and is also a Hall of Fame Top
Producer. Zeke's sire, Ch. Hoogh's Royal Ambassador (Lefty), had multiple
specialty Best of Breeds, and finished with specialty majors, including a
Nationals week win; he is also in the BCA Producers Hall of Fame. The bitch line
behind Sonny is exceptionally strong and produces a very consistent look. Zoe's
line, bred by Sara Carnrick, has been remarkably consistent through at least
four generations; this line of bitches consistently produces exceptional
toplines and tail sets, beautiful fronts and very classic "English-type" heads
with tremendous length, perfect layback, very wide jaws, and beautiful stops.
The ears tend to be very fine and feet are very small and tight. They tend to
run big, and colors could be improved.
His littermates Am/Can Ch. Resolute Rynkly Helfyre and Ch. Maxwell Lonie both finished in style. Helly took 9 points in one weekend, going Winners Bitch under Ann Hier at the BC Connecticut Specialty and Best of Winners at the back up show. She was specialty winning in Canada as well, where she earned her Canadian championship, and group placing in the U.S. Max earned all four of his majors under breeder/judges: two five point specialty majors under British judges Les Cotton and Anthony Darmanin and two other majors under British judge Fred Haynes and under Donna Mouser.
What He's Sired
Sonny's first litter is from Ch. Resolute Bettebus Belle
Star. We co-own and co-bred this two pup litter with Nancy Schultz. At a
year old, they are both show enormous promise. Win-An’s Resolute Remington was
BOW in his first show as a puppy and was Reserve to a major the next week.
Win-An's Resolute Hells Bells hasn't been shown yet. We
will report on their progress on this web site.
From a breeding to Ch. Resolute Victoria’s Secret, there are three pups in show
homes. Resolute Peacekeeper, who was BPD at the BC Philadelphia match is owned
by Laura Burgan,
co-breeder Richard Smith has Resolute Steadfast the Diva and the Faeth’s have
Ch. Resolute Confederate Son.
From a breeding to Camelot’s Elly May Bumstead, two brothers are being shown.
Finbar was BPD at the BCNJ match.
A repeat of the breeding to Ch.
Resolute Victoria's Secret produced three pups in the spring of 2002.
