Conformation
General Properties - Puff packs a big dog into a little package. At 21 months he weighs 55 pounds, but gives the impression of being considerably larger because of his substance and head size. He is a heavily-muscled animal with massive bone, but very clean, crisp, and perfectly balanced. He is a bright red piebald with moderate ticking and dense, very black pigment. His coat is short, thick and sleek.
Puff is a perfectly balanced dog who is physically incapable of standing or moving awkwardly. He moves straight down from the shoulder in front and straight down from the hip behind. When viewed in motion from the side, his topline holds together and he has a pronounced roll. He moves with his head up and his mouth closed. He naturally stands square.
Head and Neck - Puff has a very clean, massive head which shows the influence of his maternal grandfather, Ch. Resolute Magic Mountain in a third generation. His skull has great length, breadth and depth, with a deep stop running the full length of the skull. He has an exceptionally wide jaw with outstanding turn up; his jaw forms a perfect inverted “u” when viewed from the front. His teeth are perfectly straight and his jaw is true. He buttons up perfectly with no teeth showing. His ears are well set and follow the line of his skull, ideally we would like them somewhat finer. He has an unbroken wrinkle over the nose. His eyes are round, well-set, and almost black — it’s actually hard to see the pupil. His eyes are healthy — he doesn’t even have tear stains. His cheeks are nicely rounded, and his flews and dewlap are full but not coarse. He has a deep, muscular, well-arched neck.
Body - Puff is a very thick, compact, cobby dog with a beautiful topline and a very low set tail which follows the line of his back in a perfect unbroken line. Both parents are also very short-backed, with the same beautiful toplines and low set tails - his mother’s tail is a perfectly straight pump tail which is visible in her photo on this web site. Puff strongly resembles his sire, Ch Shrink-A-Bull Top Gun, in overall body type — he is short backed, and barrel-chested, with an beautiful pear shape. His shoulders are broad and well-set His rear is outstanding — nicely angulated and clearly strong and very heavily muscled. His feet are small and neat.
Temperament - Like his father and grandfather before him, Puff is an unflappable English gentleman in public — very proper, calm, and dignified regardless of what’s going on around him. At home he is quiet, easy going, and very affectionate. He gets along well with all of our dogs of both sexes — even alpha personalities and territorial dogs find him completely acceptable. He lives with other males — sleeps in a pile with them, plays in the runs with them, and shares his dinner and his toys happily. Although he is not a shy or submissive dog, he has no interest in being top dog. We have seen the same temperament repeated for three generations of males, from his grandfather, CH. DEYDEL STEADFAST HERCULES, down through his sire to Puff and Resolute Helfyre Son of A Gun, another young Gunner son that we have from another litter.
