Conformation
General Properties - Pal is a
dramatic, elegant dog with enormous style and presence. He is eye-catching in
any lineup and unforgettable in motion — flashy, well-conditioned and
beautifully balanced, with an exceptional head and neck, lovely topline and tail
set, cathedral shoulders and an outstanding rear. Pal is golden fawn, with clear
white markings. He has a white ruff extending from the center of his withers to
the back of his skull. He has a white blaze and muzzle, a perfectly even patch
covering each side of his face, with white stockings extending from his elbow in
front and his hocks behind. He has black mask and heavy black pigment. Pal has a
distinctive sour expression and a “look at me” attitude
He is a powerful mover from every perspective — he skims the ground, moving
straight down from the shoulder in front and straight down from the hip behind,
with an excellent roll and enormous reach and drive. His movement is
unrestrained, free and vigorous. Our favorite comment heard ringside. . . “he
almost floats. . . “ He carries his head high with his mouth shut. In the show
ring he moves out freely, usually somewhat ahead of his handler but checking
back to be sure you’re pleased. He is very poised and steady stacked.
Head and Neck - Pal a long,
clean, beautifully proportioned brick-shaped head with a deeply etched stop
which extends the full length of the skull. His
nose is well laid back into
the line of his skull, and the layback of the skull is flat. He has a
wide, beautifully turned jaw
which forms a perfect inverted ”U” from the front; his jaw is absolutely true,
and it buttons up correctly with no teeth showing. His ears are exceptionally
fine and perfectly set to follow the line of skull; none of the pups in his
litter needed gluing. He has a broken wrinkle over the nose. His eyes are round,
healthy, and correctly placed. He has an exceptional neck - thick and muscular
with a real “stallion” arch which is accentuated by his markings. Breeders
and breeder judges typically comment on the quality of his head — all-breed
judges love his movement.
Body
- Pal finished at approximately 63 pounds at one and a half years of age. He is
well-balanced dog with good bone, a medium length back and an excellent topline.
He has a very low set tail which clears his body well with no tightness. He has
broad sloping shoulders, correctly tacked on and exceptionally well-constructed.
His rear is outstanding — well muscled with beautiful angulation, no patellar or
cruciate problems, and solid hips. He has small, neat feet and strong pasterns.
His brisket is deep when viewed from the front, with a nicely rounded sternum
apparent from the side. He has nice tuckup. He has lots of width and depth
through the rib and chests, but his rib spring is still developing at age one
and a half. In his lines, heads, toplines and movement come in very early, and
they never change. Rib spring will continue developing for several years after
most of them finish; they are typically barrel-chested at age three, and they
hold together exceptionally well as veterans.
Temperament - Pal is an active, eager, intelligent, affectionate, and very
athletic dog. He’s always the first one there, regardless of where “there” is.
He bounds into and out of his crate, races outside, and then races back in to
see if he missed anything. He loves shows, walks, and adventures of all kinds.
He thinks he still fits on laps. We have often found him sitting on the grooming
table in the runs — there’s no way to get there except to jump straight up. He
loves baths and grooming — he should have been born a poodle. He lives with two
easy-going males and his sister; they eat together, sleep in a pile, play and go
to shows together. He is territorial, particularly about his crate if he is
closed inside and another dog is outside, but other dogs are allowed to sleep
and eat inside the crate with him. (We don’t understand it either.) We feed him
in a crate because he lets all of the other dogs eat first . . . and they don’t
tend to leave much in the way of leftovers. He won’t back down from a direct
challenge, but he lives peacefully uncrated with other dogs of both sexes.
Show Record
Pal was Best of Opposite Sex in the
Sweepstakes at the Bulldog Club of Philadelphia Specialty under Bob
Rodenski. The next week he took his first points (a three point major) by going
Best of Winners at the
Chambersburg Area Kennel Club show under breeder/judge Wally Newbill the day
before the Lower Susquehanna Bulldog Club Specialty in Harrisburg. He was
Best of Opposite in Sweeps to
his sister at the BCNE Specialty under Tina DiToro. He picked up small points
over the Summer, going Best of
Winners at Pocono Mountain KC under Bill Mott,
at Trap Falls KC under Cathy
DiGiacomo, at Farmington Valley
KC (BC Connecticut Supported entry) under Annie Clark,
and at Burlington County KC
under Bobbi Wood; he was Winners Dog at
Suffolk County KC under Cathy
DiGiacomo and at Queensboro KC
for a four point major under John Conway to finish his championship.. Pal is now
maturing and waiting to come out as a special.
Breeding Record
Background - Pal and his sisters
are exceptionally healthy dogs — they see the vet for shots, and have no medical
record at all. He has no allergies or skin problems. His eyes are clear, healthy
and well-constructed, with no extra lashes. His throat is excellent and his
nostrils are wide — he shows with his mouth shut regardless of weather, and
doesn’t seem to be bothered by heat or cold. He is strongly put together —
everything works the way it should. Out vet’s unsolicited comment when he first
saw Pal was “keep this one . . .he should be used to improve rears in this
breed.” (Our vet has the major bulldog practice in the northeast — he probably
sees hundreds in the course of a year) Pal has a real tail, set and carried low,
which clears his body fully with no tightness.
Pal's dad is CH. LITTLEPONDS CHIEF, who entered the BCA Hall of Fame as a top
producing stud in 1999. He has won the stud dog class at the Nationals and
received the Nationals Award of Merit, as well as multiple Specialty Best of
Breeds. His pups are consistently finishing with multiple specialty majors –
including specialty Best of Breeds from the classes. His grandparents, Sage and
Gawain, were Best of Opposite Sex and Best of Breed at the nationals,
respectively. Gawain is a Beckett Award winner and has produced over 75
champions, Titus is the top producing stud in history, Falon is a Beckett Award
winner, and Sage is also in the BCA Hall of Fame as a brood bitch. Two of Sage’s
littermates are also in the Hall of Fame as top producers.
Pal's mom is CH. RESOLUTE SONRISE RISIN' STAR ("Holly"). Holly took her first
major at the Bulldog Club of New England specialty under Liz Karshner, then took
the summer off. She came to us in August to get ready for the Nationals, and
finished her championship in three weeks flat. She made the final cut each day
at the 1997 Nationals and has several specialty Best of Opposite Sex since then.
Holly has four champion produce. Ch. Sonrise Resolute
Hollyscomet finished from her first litter. Three finished from her second
litter; two we kept (Pal and his sister Ch. Resolute Sonrise
Polaris) and the third is Ch. Sonrise Red Maple Starlite.
A fifth pointed pup from her first litter is just starting out.
His litter-sisters both finished with specialty majors. Ch. Resolute Sonrise
Polaris was Best in Sweeps at the Nations Sweepstakes in 2000 and finished with
three specialty majors going BOW under Frank Pupek at BCNJ, John Little at LSBC
and Jim Cardello at LIBC. Ch. Sonrise Red Maple Starlite finished with a five
point win at the Chicago Bulldog Club Specialty under Ed Kozatek.
Longevity - On the maternal
side, his grandfather, CH. CHEROKEE DAKOTA
ROBERT, is still; winning specialties at 7+ years of age. His maternal
grandmother, Resolute Stardust, is still healthy at age
eight; her only complaints are minor arthritis and slightly dry eyes. Three
generations back, CH PRESTWICK GAWAIN is still alive and Ch. Dakota Arrogant
Harriet lived to —–. Ch Post Hoc Whitney Houston lived
to 11 and a half and CH. DEYDEL STEADFAST HERCULES lived
to ten. CH. HETHERBULL BOUNTY'S FRIGATE lived 12 years,
CH GLYNDEBOURNE ROYAL FANFARE and his litter
sister lived 13 years. On the paternal side, as far as we know all the dogs two
and three generations back are still alive. CH MILLCOATS TITUS lived 12 years.
Pal has sired one litter— a half brother/sister breeding on CH. LITTLEPONDS
CHIEF born in August of 2001.
